Dwain Burns attended McMaster University and received an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree (summa cum laude) in 1989. Dwain received his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1992. Dwain has attended Liberty Mutual’ s “Anti-Fraud Academy” and the “Advanced Trial Advocacy Program”. In 2015 Dwain completed a program in alternative dispute resolution and obtained a certificate from the University of Windsor.
Dwain articled at Agro Zaffiro and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1994. Dwain has over 30 years of experience as an insurance defence lawyer. Dwain has experience in all areas of insurance law including motor vehicle, accident benefits, construction, professional negligence, products liability and property claims.
Dwain has represented clients before the Ontario Court of Justice, Superior Court of Justice, Divisional Court, the Court of Appeal for Ontario, the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, Licence Appeal Tribunal, and the Supreme Court of Canada. Dwain has conducted numerous trials, arbitrations and appeals and has over 40 reported decisions. Dwain is often called upon to make presentations or be an insurance defence panel expert at seminars and continuing legal education courses. Since 2017 Dwain has been mediating disputes throughout Southern Ontario.
Dwain is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Hamilton Law Association and Canadian Defence Lawyers. Dwain is a former hockey coach and scout leader. Dwain is a past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Hamilton Kiwanis Boy’s and Girl’s Club and a past Chair of the Board of Directors for Woodview Mental Health & Autism Services.
